Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise is set to air in Japanese theatres nationwide on December 5.
First announced at the 2025-2026 Toei Lineup Announcement held at TOEI Marunouchi in Tokyo on January 16th, Kazuyoshi Takeda’s historical fiction war manga “Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise” has been adapted into an animated film that is set to release on December 5, 2025.
The movie is directed by Goro Kuji, who has directed episodes for anime titles like Raven of the Inner Palace, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, and Cardfight!!! Vanguard. This will be his first time directing an animated movie.
The screenplay is written by Kazuyoshi Takeda in collaboration with Junji Nishimura, who directed Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid, the original Ranma ½, and the first iteration of Urusei Yatsura. The film is produced by Shinei Animation and Fugaku, and will be distributed by Toei. No cast announcement has been made as of yet.
Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise was first serialised in 2016, and released its final chapter in 2021. It was published by Hakusensha in the magazine Young Animal for a total of 3 volumes. The story is set on the island of Peleliu during the real life Battle of Peleliu in World War II, and follows a private named Tamaru during the summer of 1944. Although Private Tamaru wishes nothing more than to become a mangaka, he finds himself embroiled in a tragic and bloody battle, being part of a regiment of 10,900 Japanese soldiers ordered to resist the onslaught of 47,561 American soldiers.
