Wind Breaker Season 2 Episode 16 brings an emotional end to the KEEL arc

Sakura and the rest of Bofurin meet Umemiya.

In the previous episode of Wind Breaker Season 2, we saw Kaji take down the evil KEEL leader. The latest issue landed us in the aftermath of KEEL’s defeat and Nagato’s rescue. Anzai’s emotional moment with his friend was enough to bring a tear to our eyes. Although there were no fights, it was a nice reminder that the Wind Breaker anime is much more than a delinquent show with great action.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Guys who express their emotions are really, really cool

Ever since the beginning, Satoru Nii’s manga and its anime adaptation has shown us that opening up about your feelings to your loved ones only makes you grow stronger. When Nagato explains how KEEL’s leader Natori had saved him from a group of delinquents only to pull him into KEEL’s iron grasp, we can’t help but feel anger. Although it’s frustrating, we understand why Nagato kept his involvement with the group a secret from Anzai and Tsuchiya. But the moment Anzai pulls Nagato into a hug after they open their hearts to each other is one of the best parts of this season yet.

It’s not just Nagato and Anzai however. Even Sakura, albeit angrily, expresses his frustration with not being able to fight properly and taking help from their seniors. Due to this, he learns that his friends feel equally as frustrated.

Instead of blaming Sakura, they respect him and want to improve themselves so he doesn’t have to worry about them during a fight. It was sweet to see Sakura finally express himself a bit better after being such a hardheaded tsundere throughout Season 1. It seems that the protagonist is slowly opening his heart to his friends and seniors, and we can’t be happier about it.

Umemiya is the mentor every troubled teenager needs

Hajime Umemiya, the leader of Bofurin, emerged as one of the central characters in Season 1. His fight against Shishitoren’s leader was one of the highlights of the series. When Sakura and his friends, along with Nagato, meet up with him after their fight against KEEL, everyone is pleasantly surprised. He reassures Nagato when the boy apologises to him for pulling the first years into his mess. He then kindly offers him a plate of food. When Nagato starts to cry while eating, Umemiya tells him to remember how good the food tastes when he’s with people that make him feel safe and loved. Whenever life gets hard, it’s important to remember that there are people who love you and will do anything to protect you.

When Sakura keeps sulking about his own fight, Umemiya tells him that he froze during the battle because he cares about his friends. Seeing them get injured is bound to make him freeze up in fear. All the boys feel reassured thanks to Umemiya’s kind words, and we are once again reminded that this boy who’s not more than 18 years old brought a school full of delinquents into a path of righteousness. Nagato and Anzai’s reunion with Tsuchiya was another emotional and beautiful moment. I loved this episode for all the amazing character development we got to see.

Unfortunately, that’s not where it ends. Something sinister is brewing across the horizon as we see a guy in the KEEL uniform arrive and reveal how disappointed he is with the group. He comments that Bofurin has gotten weaker, which means he’s aware of the group and its activities. It seems that this tattooed man had trained KEEL to become as dangerous as they were and is looking forward to his own hand-to-hand against Bofurin. The next episode of Wind Breaker Season 2 is coming out on 24 April, 2025.
