The webcomic turned award-winning manga is getting an anime!
It has been revealed that Jinushi's romantic comedy, slice-of-life manga “Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You” is getting a television anime series, slated for a 2026 premiere. The anime adaptation will receive a nationwide broadcast on TBS, although no global release has been revealed so far.

Besides the planned 2026 premiere, no further details have been revealed like studio, staff, and cast. However, Jinushi did release a celebratory visual commemorating the news on X (formerly Twitter).
“Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You” began as a Twitter webcomic in March 2022, and later on received a serialisation in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine August of that same year. Since then, the series has been collected into six tankobon volumes as of January 2025, with a total of 50 chapters so far.
The manga also won the 2022 Next Manga Award in the web category, as well as ranking seventh in the 2023 edition of Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list for best manga for male readers, and16th in Manga Taisho.
Square Enix also publishes the series in English, and describes the plot as:
At age forty-five, office worker Sasaki has had enough of the corporate grind. His only solace is smoking-and the friendly smile of supermarket cashier Yamada. When Sasaki can't find Yamada after a particularly trying day, a striking woman invites him to smoke with her. The despondent man thinks he's made a new smoking buddy in the cool, teasing Tayama, but Sasaki doesn't realize he already knows her!
