Demon Slayer’s “Akaza’s Return” earns over 12 billion yen in box office revenue

The film has recorded the fastest box office revenue in Japanese film history to exceed 10 billion yen.

It has been revealed that the currently-running “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie - Infinity Castle Arc Chapter One - Akaza’s Return” has grossed a whopping 12,872,170,000 yen (or about US$87.10 million) in the first 10 days since its release. This means that over 9 million people have watched the movie across the 443 theatres where it is currently showing in Japan, since it first premiered on 18 July, 2025.

“Akaza’s Return” beats out “Mugen Train” opening weekend record

“Mugen Train”, which released in 2020, recorded an opening box office of 4.62 billion yen (around US$43.85 million at the time) with over 3.42 million viewers, but it’s also important to note that “Mugen Train” only had a three-day opening weekend compared to “Akaza’s Return”, which enjoyed a four-day opening weekend thanks to a Monday holiday.

However, “Akaza’s Return” also beat out “Mugen Train” on opening day results, first day results, and single day results. All-in-all, “Akaza’s Return” recorded a total of 7.31 billion yen earnings during its opening weekend.

“Mugen Train” is still the highest-earning film in Japan ever, with a listed total earnings of 40.34 billion yen (US$273 million), as well as the highest-earning Japanese film worldwide in 2020.

It’s still too early to say if “Akaza’s Return” will ever overtake “Mugen Train” in this regard, but with how much fans are pouring in their support, we can safely say that it’s a matter of time.
