The story takes place in a world where humans are turning into cats.
Japan's National Cat Day may have already passed but it came with a treat for cat lovers. The upcoming feline-centric anime series, Night of the Living Cat (also known as Nyaight of the Living Cat) has just revealed a new trailer.
The new trailer highlights a world where people who snuggle with cats don’t just get covered in fur—they turn into adorable kitties themselves, thanks to a mysterious virus. Alongside the trailer, eight new cast members were also introduced.
The official website and X (formerly Twitter) account of the series also announced that the anime will air in July 2025, although a definitive release date has yet to be revealed.
The main voice actors of the series are:
- Masaaki Mizunaka (Keisuke Baji in Tokyo Revengers and Yukinari Arima in Wind Breaker) as Kunagi
- Reina Ueda (Kanao Tsuyuri in Demon Slayer and Miyo Saimori in My Happy Marriage) as Kaoru
- Reiji Kawashima (Fushi in To Your Eternity and Finn Ames in Mashle) as Arata
- Yū Serizawa (Yumemi Yumemite in Kakegurui XX and Mini Yaemori in Rent-A-Girlfriend) as Tsutsumi
- Subaru Kimura (Satori Tendo in Haikyu!! and Aoi Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen) as Ren
- Yoshiki Nakajima (Yugo Okami in My Roommate is a Cat and Shun Aoi in Aoashi) as Masaki
- Hiroki Yasumoto (Christophe Giacometti in Yuri on Ice and Qual in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) as Tanishi
- Ryōta Takeuchi (Wakatoshi Ushijiima in Haikyu!! and Koji Yatake in Given) as Gaku
Based on a manga series written by Hawkman and illustrated by Mecha-Roots, the anime adaptation was first announced on February 22, 2024, which coincides with Japan's National Cat Day.
The anime is being produced by OLM, while Sony Pictures Television and Slow Curve will handle production and planning. Tomohiro Kamitani directsn the series while Takashi Miike is the chief director. Shingo Irie is writing the scripts and Takao Maki is handling the character designs. Koji Endo is composing the music for the series. The anime’s opening theme, Nyaight of the Living Cat, will be performed by Endo and feature Marty Friedman and Heidi Shepherd.
Night of the Living Cat takes place in a world where a mysterious virus has been plaguing humans. Instead of zombies or monsters, the virus causes humans to turn into cats after they snuggle with a cat. When many people give into the temptation and turn feline, the series protagonist Kunagi struggles to resist the urge to give belly rubs to the adorable cats living all around him.
