Mamoru Hosoda’s anime movie “Scarlet” adds Mamoru Miyano, Kenjiro Tsuda and more to its cast

The movie will open in Japan on 21 November, 2025.

The upcoming battle fantasy anime movie Scarlet, created by Mamoru Hosoda, just revealed some more cast members. The film will be released theatrically in Japan on 21 November. It has also been announced that the movie will be shown at the Animation Is Film Festival, as well as at the New York Film Festival, which will run from 26  September to 13 October 2025. The movie first premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on 4 September 2025, and was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival on 10 September, 2025.

The new cast members who joined the movie are:

Mamoru Hosoda wrote and directed the movie at Studio Chizu. Takaki Yamashita served as the animation director. Hosoda is known for his astounding work in films such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Mirai, Belle, Wolf Children, and more. Sony Pictures Releasing International is set to distribute the movie internationally. At first, it was announced that the film will be theatrically released in the US on 21 December, but the date has been postponed to sometime in early 2026. 

The story of Scarlet is set in a medieval-era fantasy land. A princess named Scarlet undertakes a dangerous quest to avenge the wrongful death of her father. As she journeys through various places, she ends up in the ‘Land of the Dead’ where those without a purpose disappear into nothingness. But she meets an idealistic man from present day, who promises to show her a world without bitterness and regret.
