Leviathan anime set to premiere on Netflix on 10 July

The anime is based on a novel trilogy by Scott Westerfeld

Netflix announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the Qubic Pictures-produced upcoming anime series, Leviathan, is set to premiere as a Netflix exclusive on 10 July. The announcement included staff details and a promotional visual.

Leviathan details and more

The anime is being helmed by Christophe Ferreira at Qubic Pictures, with music by Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi. Joe Hisaishi, who’s best-known for his work in various Studio Ghibli movies, is writing original songs for the series. Orange is in charge of production.

So far, no cast members are yet to be revealed.

The anime pulls from the alternate history young adult novel trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, the first of which came out in 2009. The novel tells of an alternative version of World War I, where mechanised war machines and genetically engineered living creatures battle, and at the centre of it all is a prince named Alek and a commoner girl named Deryn.

The official synopsis for the trilogy is:

Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected ways, taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.
