The Jujutsu Kaisen manga spin-off takes place 68 years in the future.
Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga ended in September 2024 with a total of 271 chapters. Although the ending was highly unsatisfying for many, the story is still well-loved.
And maybe because it's so well-loved that it's getting a new spin-off!
A few days ago, it was announced that Gege Akutami is penning a new short manga series, with illustrations by Yuji Iwasaki. Titled “Modulo” the series released its first chapter on 8 September, 2025. It turned out to be a spin-off of JJK, set 68 years in the future after the war against Sukuna.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 1 focuses on Yuta and Maki’s grandchildren
If you haven’t read the first chapter or gotten the spoilers already, let us be the ones to tell you that YutaMaki is indeed canon now. The story of Modulo takes place in 2086, 68 years after the Culling Game.
The protagonists are Yuta and Maki’s two grandchildren: Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu. As children, Yuka was more close to her grandfather, while Tsurugi was his grandmother’s favourite. After both Maki and Yuta pass away, the fate of the Jujutsu World is left at the hand of the two teenagers.
But wait, there’s more! As you might have already guessed from the title, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has the one crazy thing that JJK lacked: Aliens. That’s right. One of the central characters, Maru, is from another planet.
Without going into much detail, it seems that an alien invasion is underway, and Japan is their main target because of its almost unique hold on Cursed Energy. As the land of Curses and Jujutsu Sorcerer, will Japan be able to protect itself from the extraterrestrial threat. And what would Yuka, Tsurugi, and Maru’s role be in all this? Well, that’s what Modulo sets out to find!
Modulo is Gege Akutami’s first work since finishing Jujutsu Kaisen, and fans are understandably excited about it. The inclusion of aliens definitely makes the story more intriguing, albeit a bit confusing. With a unique art style and storyline, the series is definitely bound to attract some eyes.
However, Gege has announced that Modulo will be a much shorter series, only serialising for 6 months, and spanning over 3 volumes. If you are a fan of JJK, now’s the time for you to head to Viz Media or Manga Plus to read the first chapter of the new manga. The next chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo will be available on Sunday, 14 September. Jujutsu Kaisen’s anime adaptation is also returning with its 3rd season in January 2026.
But the new manga spin-off is not the only thing to look forward to for Jujutsu Kaisen. It has also been announced that the manga will receive multiple novel spin-offs by author Hirayama Yumeaki. Known for his horror mystery novels, Yumeaki has a dedicated fanbase who love his work. JJK fans can't wait to see what he brings to the franchise.
