Legendary voice actor, singer, actor Tsunehiko Kamijo passes away at 85

He lent his voice to multiple Studio Ghibli movies including Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke.

The official website of Agency KeiSeven Nakamuraya announced on 1 August that elder voiceover artist, singer, and actor Tsunehiki Kamijo succumbed to death on 22 July, 2025. Kamijo passed away due to old age, surrounded by friends and family. He was 85 years old. A funeral for him was held, and was attended by close friends and family.

Tsunehiko Kamijo was a legendary singer, actor, and voice artist

Born on 7 March 1940, Kamijo began his career as a singer in 1962. In 1971, he won the Grand Prize at the 2nd World Popular Song Festival for his fan-favourite number Tabidachi No Uta. He starred in movies such as Tora-san’s Lullaby and Death of a Tea Master, as well as in televised dramas such as the Taiga Drama, and Kinpachi-sensei series. He was also a stage actor, and his work includes performances of Man of La Mancha, My Fair Lady, Cabaret, and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

When it comes to voice acting, Kamijo was mainly known for his work on several Ghibli anime movies. He voiced the Mamma Aiuto Gang Boss in Porco Rosso, Gonza in Princess Mononoke, and Chichiyaku in Spirited Away. He also voiced Sebastian in the Japanese dub of The Little Mermaid. The legendary man passed away peacefully, and the whole industry mourns his loss.
