The anime premiered on 11 July, 2025.
The dark action anime Tougen Anki, based on Yura Urushibara’s manga, is definitely one of the most anticipated shows of Summer 2025. So far, the first three episodes of the series have not disappointed when it comes to the action sequences. It seems that people love this pure shonen series so much that it has reached the #1 spot on Netflix Japan. Not only that, it has also secured the top 5 position on Netflix Global, behind just one other anime.
Tougen Anki is gaining rapid popularity
According to the report by distribution company REMOW, Tougen Anki has climbed to the top spot in Netflix Japan with just three episodes. Moreover, on the Global non-English TV ranking, it has reached the 5th spot, behind Squid Game, Under a Dark Sun, Dandadan, and Ángela. The only other anime ahead of Tougen Anki in the list is Dandadan, which is one of the most popular series in the world right now.
Tougen Anki is streaming globally on many platforms, including Prime Videos, Netflix, Crunchyroll (including an English dub), and more. It’s not surprising that with the perfect blend of CGI and traditional animation in its breathtaking action scenes, the series has already become a fan-favourite. It also has an emotional yet linear plotline, which makes it easier to follow for a wider audience. A mini companion anime titled Onimomomomo is also being released along with each main episode, which helps people calm down after an intense fight.
Ato Nonaka is the director of the Tougen Anki anime series under Studio Hibari. Hiroyuki Hashimoto is the assistant director while Yukie Sugawara is handling the series’ scripts. Ryoko Amisaki is the character designer while Hiroyuki Becchaku is the art designer and Scott MacDonald is the art director. Ryota Fukushima is directing the CGI with Yumika Okazaki helming the editing department. Kohta Yamamoto is composing the music while Pony Canyon produces it. Yen Press publishes Yura Urushibara’s manga in English and describes the story as:
Shiki Ichinose would have never guessed his adoptive father used to be an Oni-hunting Momotarou, much less that the old man walked away from that life just to raise him despite Shiki’s dangerous Oni blood. After seeing the only parent he ever knew murdered by a Momotarou assassin, Shiki’s blood awakens. Thrust into an ancient conflict between Oni and Momotarou, Shiki will fight to survive, to take his revenge—and to hold back the calamity coursing through his veins…
