A Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation is one of the main projects coming to the streaming platform.
The massively popular anime streaming platform Crunchyroll has just passed the 17 million subscriber mark. With so many active users, it’s no wonder that parent company Sony wants to bring it even more to the forefront. Rahul Purini, the president of Crunchyroll, recently revealed in a Forbes interview that they plan to work with Sony and expand their distribution network even more. However, according to a report by Deadline, there is much more for fans to be excited about.
Sony wants to integrate Crunchyroll into other services and products
Crunchyroll is immensely popular amongst anime fans by itself, but Sony wants to take it further. During a corporate strategy presentation in 2025, Sony mentioned plans to expand Crunchyroll’s reach by focusing more on anime-related mobile games and merchandise. This move is part of a broader strategy to widen the platform’s scope and variety.
Crunchyroll already has a growing roster of mobile games that it offers to its subscribers, and Sony aims to leverage that by embedding the SVOD service more deeply into its PlayStation Network. Notably, the company wants to make Crunchyroll more accessible via PS5 devices, integrating content and commerce more tightly across platforms.
The platform is also expected to release several new anime projects to attract more subscribers. One such project is the Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation, based on the video game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The series is set to air in 2027. Other than the Ghost of Tsushima anime, Crunchyroll will also stream the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle movie after its theatrical release. Solo Leveling is another immensely popular anime that Crunchyroll is actively promoting, as it has received significant attention as a new-age anime release.
Sony has made significant investments in the anime industry, including the acquisitions of Crunchyroll, Aniplex, and a stake in Kadokawa. These moves follow a global increase in anime viewership over the past few years, with millions of fans engaging with the genre worldwide.
