Makoto Yukimura’s manga has been serialised for 20 years.
For the last two decades, Makoto Yukimura’s epic historical manga series Vinland Saga has won the hearts of readers around the world. Its anime adaptation also became one of the most critically-acclaimed series of all time. However, it seems that after 20 years of publication, the manga is finally coming to an end on 25 July, 2025.
Vinland Saga is reportedly ending next month
The release date of Vinland Saga's final chapter has been the subject of speculation for some time now, as the author himself had commented that there’s not much of the story left to tell. However, according to the Manga Mogura RE X (formerly Twitter) account and the Vinland Saga subreddit, the final chapter of the manga is coming out on 25 July in the #9 issue of Monthly Afternoon.
It’s likely that the series will publish just two more chapters. The Project Vinland Translation Team Discord seems to have gotten their hands on the upcoming issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon early, and confirmed the news online. However, no official confirmation by the publication or the author has been released as of yet. Previously, it was thought that the Vinland Saga manga will end in June of this year. However, it seems that fans will get one more chapter of their favourite manga next month.
Spoilers ahead for the manga's current arc: Vinland Saga is currently in a pretty depressing arc, and keeping true to the historical aspect of the manga, it seems the ending will not be much more hopeful. Thorfinn and his friends will likely have to leave the dream of Vinland in failure.
With the way it’s ending, Vinland Saga will definitely go down as one of the best-written masterpieces of recent years. Kodansha publishes the manga and describes the story as:
As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band’s leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father. Sustaining Thorfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery… the land Leif called Vinland.
