The Meireki-era Daikaiju has been defeated.
Get your tissues ready everyone, because the penultimate chapter of the Kaiju No. 8 manga is out and things are already getting emotional. The grand kaiju has been defeated by Kafka’s ultimate attack and everyone is celebrating the win. However, our protagonist, who bonded his soul with the Meireki-era warriors, is ready to leave the plane of existence with them. However, Commander Isao Shinomiya is the one standing in his way.

Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 128 recap
Kafka’s punch deals critical damage to the massive Daikaiju’s core. Everyone waits with bated breath as the monster screams, thrashes, and slowly falls to the ground. Soon, one of the Defence Force members says that the vital signs are negative, and the target has been successfully destroyed.
After a short second, everyone starts to cheer as the biggest threat against humanity has been neutralised. The other revived monsters also start losing their vitals and Mina lets out a relieved breath. But her happiness is short-lived as she looks for Kafka and finds him lying face-down on the ground. She yells his name as Kafka feels the souls of all the Meireki-era warriors fading into nothingness after getting their vengeance. Since he became one with them, he will also leave this plane.
He muses that he’d be lying if he said he had no regrets, but looking back at it, he gave this fight everything he had. Thanks to the fallen warriors, he was able to keep his childhood promise of fighting side-by-side with Mina. He remembers Mina, Ichikawa, Kikoru, Hoshina, Narumi, Iharu, Haruichi, Aoi, all the JAKDF members and all the cleaners he worked with and thanks them all in his mind.
But just as he closes his eyes to bid his final goodbye, Isao Shinomiya appears in front of him and says that he won’t allow it. Kafka is extremely shocked to see him talking in his mind as he’s supposed to be dead. Commander Shinomiya reveals that all the consciences that were trapped by the Daikaiju have been freed. He thanks Kafka for freeing him and says this is the end.
Kafka apologises to him for destroying the city of Tokyo during his battle against the mega monster. Isao says it’s okay as the same happened with No. 6. Humanity has faced countless calamities and always bounced back stronger, building a better world. This time too, humanity will recover.
Shinomiya says he has one final mission for Kafka, and it is to help rebuild the world and help his comrades face the threats that are yet to come. Kafka apologises to him, saying he already turned his heart into a Kaiju core, and can’t stay in this world any longer. Suddenly, Isao Shinomiya charges at him and punches him straight in the heart.
As Kafka falls, the commander says to take it as he doesn’t need it anymore. Then he asks Kafka to take care of everyone, especially his daughter Kikoru Shinomiya. Kafka’s world goes black and we see the mega monster’s body collapsing. All nearby units are told to evacuate immediately. As Kafka’s body falls to the ground, Kikoru yells his name. Thankfully, Reno Ichikawa is able to catch him in his arms just in time. Mina looks with baited breath as Reno and Kikoru try to wake Kafka up. But they look with shocked faces when his Kaiju mask starts to dissipate, and his human face comes out.

Kafka Hibino is human again! I already guessed that he was somehow going to be saved, but Isao Shinomiya being the one stopping his death didn’t come to me. The relief in the troop members when they saw Kafka was alive is something I resonated with very well. There is only one chapter of Naoya Matsumoto’s manga left to be published, and in my opinion, it’s going to be a timeskip where they show us how the world and the JAKDF members are doing now. I am already sad that the manga is ending in just one chapter, but it’s time to say goodbye to Kafka, Mina, and everyone else. The series was such a fun and emotional ride that I will definitely remember it for a long time.
