Chocolat and Vanilla are coming back to capture hearts after 20 years!
Hideaki Anno-owned Studio Khara has confirmed a new anime project for the beloved magical girl series “Sugar Sugar Rune” by renowned shoujo mangaka Moyoco Anno. The announcement, which was relayed during Japan Expo 2025, was paired with an animated prequel short titled “Sugar Sugar Rune Les deux sorcieres”.
The revival anime adaptation comes as part of the 20th anniversary celebration for the series
If you’ve been a fan of magical girl anime since the early 2000s, you might have watched the original “Sugar Sugar Rune” series in 2005. The series followed two young witches named Chocolat and Vanilla, who, in a bid to win the crown and become queen of the Magical World, were sent to the human world to capture the hearts of every boy they came across. The anime was produced by Studio Pierrot, and ran with 51 episodes until its finale in June of 2006.
Given that the series has turned 20 years old just this last 2 July, a revival adaptation is something that dedicated fans have been waiting for. The added layer that Studio Khara is producing the series is the cherry on top–Hideaki Anno and Moyoco Anno have been married since 2002. The couple have been known to collaborate on various works by the “Neon Genesis Evangelion” director, with Moyoco Anno providing her illustration expertise for many of his projects. The short film and the subsequent future anime project is the first Moyoco Anno work produced by Studio Khara.
Yusuke Matsui wrote and directed “Sugar Sugar Rune Les deux sorcieres”, and will also helm the anime project, other staff and cast are yet to be revealed.
The anime is based on Moyoco Anno’s manga of the same name, which began serialisation in the shoujo manga magazine Nakayoshi from September 2003 to May 2007, with a total of eight volumes published by Kodansha.
