After working in multiple Makoto Shinkai movies as an artist, Shinomiya’s first movie will be released in 2025.
Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, known for his amazing work in timeless movies such as Garden of Words and Your Name, is finally making his directorial debut this year. The talented artist is directing his full-length feature film, Hanarokushou Ga Akeru Hi Ni - A NEW DAWN, simply known as A NEW DAWN. The first teaser trailer and a beautiful illustration for the movie was released on January 15, 2025.
The trailer for the movie is exploding with colours and explosions. The art style stays with the audience even after the trailer is over. As per the announcement, A NEW DAWN will be coming to Japanese theatres sometime in 2025, although a specific release date has not been revealed. Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, who has worked on Makoto Shinkai and Sunao Kataabuchi’s films, is slated as director. It’s a Japanese-French joint production with Shinomiya and the French studio Miyu Productions. The character designer is Utsuhita, with Shohei Hamaguchi as the animation director, Ryoko Majima as the art director, and Shuta Hasunuma as the composer. The two main voice actors for the movie are Riku Hagiwara as Keitaro Obinata and Kotone Furukawa as Kaoru Shikimori.

The story takes place in a small town where an old fireworks factory is getting shut down. Keitaro Obinata, the main character, has been holed up in a factory for years to make the perfect firework to make his father, who vanished 6 years ago, proud. Joining him is Kaoru, his childhood friend who moved to Tokyo but came back. The two set out on a journey to find a rare and toxic pigment called verdigris which can create a perfectly blue firework and save the factory from being closed.
