Demon Slayer “Akaza’s Return” breaks into Japan’s top 10 all-time highest-earning films list

“Akaza’s Return” has earned 17.6 billion yen in the 17 days since its release.

It has been revealed that the first installment in Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle Arc trilogy, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie - Infinity Castle Arc Chapter One - Akaza’s Return”, has now amassed a whopping 17,639,557,600 yen (US$119,169,693.66 converted) in the 17 days since its release last 18 July.

The film has sold over 12.5 million tickets, and has surpassed the 2003 Bayside Shakedown 2 movie–becoming the tenth highest-earning film of all time in Japan.

“Akaza’s Return” is Demon Slayer’s biggest movie since “Mugen Train”

“Akaza’s Return” previously earned the distinction of recording the fastest box office revenue in Japanese film history to exceed 10 billion yen. The movie grossed a whopping 12,872,170,000 yen (or about US$87.10 million) in the first 10 days since its release, The movie also beat out “Mugen Train” with its opening weekend recordearning gross total to 7.31 billion yen (US$49.55 million).

“Mugen Train”, which released in 2020, recorded an opening box office of 4.62 billion yen (around US$43.85 million at the time) with over 3.42 million viewers, but it’s also important to note that “Mugen Train” only had a three-day opening weekend compared to “Akaza’s Return”, which enjoyed a four-day opening weekend thanks to a Monday holiday.

However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that “Akaza’s Return” is soaring to greater heights. Although “Mugen Train” is currently sitting as Japan’s highest-earning film of all time, it’s safe to say that “Akaza’s Return”, and its subsequent Infinity Castle trilogies, will reach–or even break–the record in the following years.
