“Mononoke the Movie - Ashes of Rage” wins at the Fantasia International Film Festival

The film received the audience award, marking the second time the franchise has won it.

The second animated Mononoke movie Ashes of Rage had a phenomenal showing at the 2025 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. The movie was able to win the Bronze Audience Award for Best Animated Feature. This continues the streak from last year, when the first Mononoke movie Phantom in the Rain won the same award. Other anime screenings at the festival ranged from Angel’s Egg to the initial four episodes of Nyaight of the Living Cat, and more.

Mononoke the Movie - Ashes of Rage impressed the audience

In 2024, during the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival, Phantom in the Rain won the Bronze Audience Award and the Satoshi Kon Award for Best Animated Feature. The legacy continued with Ashes of Rage also winning the Audience Award this year. The third and final installment of the movie trilogy is coming out in Spring 2026, and fans are eager to see if it manages to nab the award again, resulting in a hattrick.

The Ashes of Rage movie will be released globally on Netflix on 14 August, 2025. Fans can currently stream the Mononoke anime series on Crunchyroll. The Phantom in the Rain movie is available to watch on Netflix.

Kenji Nakamura directs the Ashes of Rage film at Twin Engine EOTA. Kitsuneko Nagata  is the original character designer while Yuuichi Takahashi designs characters for the animation. He is also the chief animation director while Taku Iwasaki composes the music. Netflix describes the upcoming film as:

The Medicine Seller returns as the Edo harem faces a new crisis, with family feuds, inner turmoil and fiery envy igniting the birth of a raging spirit.
