Loid finds something shocking in Melinda Desmond’s journal.
After a few weeks of intermission, Tatsuya Endo’s Spy x Family manga is finally back with a full chapter. The latest issue focuses mostly on Melinda and Yor. Loid tells Fiona to learn more about Melinda’s associates since she hasn’t visited him in a while. On the other hand, Yor joins Melinda in one of her mystical meetings where she meets some new and interesting people. Loid finds a clue in Melinda’s journal.
Spy x Family Chapter 121 recap
The chapter opens with Loid and Fiona talking about how Melinda Desmond missed her appointments. Loid says that her tests show no signs of mental disorders, which means something must really be wrong with her husband for her to think he has been replaced by an alien. Based on what Melinda said, they’ve been focusing on Donovan’s activities around the time of his older and younger sons’ births. He also wants to learn more about Donovan as a person at the Imperial Scholar event if he wants to understand his war plans.
Unfortunately, due to Anya’s performance at school, things on that front haven’t been going that well. He tells Fiona to keep an eye on Donovan’s associates from the time of his sons’ births. Loid decides to use Yor to get closer to Melinda as the two women share a bond. The scene moves to a bowling alley where Yor wins the game in their team’s favour using her incredible strength. After everyone leaves, she gives Melinda some tea to help her sleep, and even proves that it’s not toxic by eating the leaves herself. Melinda smiles and asks her what her plans are after this.
In the car, Melinda reveals that she has been seeing Yor’s husband Loid as her psychiatrist. She admits that he’s a great and understanding doctor, but due to her experience with Donovan, she can’t stand letting anyone attempt to see right through her. She has grown to fear being seen and known because of how Donovan behaves. Yor says that she understands what it feels to be scared of letting someone know her true self, as she’s also scared of letting Loid know more about her.
Next we see Yor and Melinda sitting around a table with hats with antennas on their heads. One of the others sitting at the table is a bearded man, who says that they’re there to seek harmony with the universe. Yor is spooked, but Melinda assures her that these are all people who share her interest in the mystical and the occult. The man, called Mr. Crowley tries to explain how they try to connect with the larger universe but Yor doesn’t understand it. Another woman explains that the process is kind of like doing a Planchet with an Ouija Board, but instead of the board they use a typewriter.
Melinda tells Yor that she can share her worries here. Since she can’t talk about being an assassin, Yor asks if she should eat the ice cream off the lid in front of her husband or if it will be too crass. Everyone says her matter is too trivial but Melinda supports her. Everyone tries to connect with the universe and the omens that are typed out seem too vague and dangerous. Melinda assures Yor that her husband will accept her no matter what. After a while, Yor and Melinda leave, and the latter apologises for a boring session. Before leaving, she gives a journal to Yor and asks her to pass it to Loid.
After coming back home, Yor hands the journal to Loid, who is surprised to see how strong her bond is with Melinda. From the journal he learns that after Donovan fell ill and collapsed, he started behaving like a different person after coming home. He also once asked Melinda to cancel her specific plans even though she didn’t tell him about it. This makes her think that he’s keeping an eye on her every move. She had wanted to meet Professor Authen, but her husband’s harsh glare stopped her. The name of Authen shocks Loid as he’s their neighbour. In the final panel we see Sigmund Authen and his wife Barbara Authen.
Spy x Family Chapter 121 review
The chapter was very dialogue heavy even though nothing much happened. Yor and Melida’s session with the other Occult practitioners was a bust, but very entertaining. I’m also interested to see what Yor does with her newfound confidence, although I think she won’t tell Loid about her profession yet. Fiona might be able to find some dirt on Donovan. But most importantly, we’ll likely learn about Professor Authen and his involvement with Donovan’s change soon. It seems there is a motive behind him moving in as the Forgers’ neighbour.
