Demon Slayer “Akaza’s Return” movie surpasses 30 billion Yen at Japanese box office

It’s the fastest movie to ever reach this landmark in Japan’s history.

The anime movie Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie - Infinity Castle Arc Chapter One - Akaza’s Return continues to demolish previous records at a breakneck pace. Once again, the film has surpassed its predecessor the Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, which amassed 30 billion Yen at the Japanese box office within 59 days of its release.

However, Akaza’s Return has broken the barrier in just 46 days, and is currently the fastest movie to have ever made 30 billion Yen in Japan to this day. The film opened in Japan on 18 July, 2025.

Akaza’s Return’s international release will continue to grow its box office

According to reports from Oricon, the Akaza’s Return movie has sold a total of 22,007,405 (over 22 million) tickets by the end of its eighth week, raking in a shocking 31,425,916,900 Yen (31.4 billion Yen/ about 213 million USD). It has become the fastest film to do so, breaking the record of its predecessor, the Mugen Train movie.

Moreover, on the eighth week of its release, Akaza’s Return earned 804,473,800 yen (over 804 million Yen/ about 5.45 million USD), selling 501,000 tickets from Friday to Sunday. This caused it to firmly remain at the #1 spot, even though it’s been eight weeks since the film came out in Japan.

It has also been reported that Akaza’s Return has surpassed the total earnings of Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winning movie Spirited Away to become the second highest grossing movie of all time in Japan. Now it’s only behind its predecessor, the Mugen Train movie, which still has the first spot.

Previously, the movie became the fastest to rake in 25 billion Yen at the Japanese box office by passing the threshold in just four weeks. The Mugen Train film crossed the 40 billion Yen mark 220 days into its release, and it seems Akaza’s Return is going to break that record as well. Fans throughout the world are excited to see the film as it hasn’t been released in many countries yet. We can safely say that as the movie releases in more countries, its box office records will also grow in leaps and bounds.

The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie - Infinity Castle Arc Chapter One - Akaza’s Return movie is the first film in the Infinity Castle trilogy, which animates the final arc of Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga. The film covers two of the most anticipated and emotional battles of the series- Doma vs. Shinobu, and Giyu and Tanjiro vs. Akaza.

Haruo Sotozaki directs the anime at Ufotable with Akira Matsushima as the character designer and chief animation director. Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina compose the music.
