Gountess’ power is deeply connected to his childhood with Too Lily.
The previous chapter of Kei Urana’s Gachiakuta manga revealed how Gountess and Lily met in their childhood and became close. In the new chapter, we learn that the main reason why Gountess developed as a Giver and started making Chokers was so he could always stay connected with Lily. Due to their lives being so closely connected with one another, it’s easier for Mymo to use her to blackmail Gountess even when he wants to give up.

Gachiakuta Chapter 149 recap
The chapter begins with Gountess saying how he was told that a person who has a limited lifespan shouldn't give in to impulses. We then see him teaching Lily to read as he compliments her on how fast she was learning. He asks why she kept reading books about clowns and magic, and she answers that it would be fun if there was a clown who could use magic. One day, Lily sees a cane belonging to Gountess’ grandmother and asks if it’s a wand. However, grandma only smiles and asks Lily to hold onto her precious wand. Seeing Lily so happy, Gountess wonders how she can impulsively smile so much when her life has been filled with nothing but darkness.
One day, Gountess gets a bad attack of his illness that leaves him writhing on the floor. Lily helps him by holding his hand and telling him she’s here. Just by looking at her smile, Gountess feels his breathing get easier, and he wants to know how she does it. One day, his grandmother asks Lily to stay over because it’s getting dark, but Lily says she needs to go because otherwise her house will be overtaken by bugs. While watching her go, Gountess realises that although she will tell her about her life if he asks, he doesn't fully know her or what she's really thinking. He sets on finding a way to find out.
The feeling of wanting to know her innermost thoughts grows so big that they start channelling through the necklace his father gave him. Through the magic and his blood, the oxygen mask he was holding turns into a communication Choker. The first impulse he ever had turned Gountess into a Giver. He gifts the first Choker to Lily, so they could talk even when she was at her home. He realises that he had a strong wish and the necklace granted it. Lily is happy that they can be connected all the time.
One night, Gountess wakes up as he faintly hears Lily crying for her mother. He realises that’s why she always goes back to her empty broken home every night so she could be connected to her parents. The happy faces she makes is her attempt to fight against her sad life. He reaches out to her by calling her through the Choker, and says that he’ll be her home. Back at the present, Gountess says that his real power is to reach their hearts through the Chokers. He reads the thoughts and delivers them to the soul. In the final panel, we see Mymo telling him that he will gladly make use of that power.
Gachiakuta Chapter 149 review
Every chapter with Gountess and Lily’s backstory gets sadder. Now we understand why Gountess power works the way it does. Moreover, the flashback also taught us why Lily can perform ‘magic’ with her staff, which is her Vital Instrument. Both of their Vital Instruments were born from their childhood, and the time they spent with each other. I will never forgive Mymo for holding Lily above Gountess’ head to make him do his bidding. I do sincerely hope that Rudo and the others can save him in time before Mymo takes his last remaining life force away.
