Nigeria attempts to score against Japan before half-time in Blue Lock Chapter 317

Gin Gagamaru proves his prowess as a goalkeeper.

In the previous chapters of the Blue Lock manga, we saw how the Blue Lock team already scored two goals against team Nigeria in the first match of the U20 World Cup. Of course, if they don’t fight back, Nigeria has no chance of winning, as the clock is ticking and it’s almost half-time. After another emotional flashback, we see the Nigerian team depend on their super ace Onazi to score a goal. But scoring against Blue Lock isn’t as easy as it seems.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Blue Lock Chapter 317 recap

Kuso realises they can't win this match (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

The chapter begins with only 10 minutes left in the first half, and Blue Lock is already two goals ahead. As the game starts again, Nigerian player Kuso realises that Blue Lock is the strongest team they’ve ever played against. The foundation of their strength lies in guys along the field’s center line- Isagi, Karasu, and Oliver. To support that foundation, they have Bachira and Chigiri, two attackers with imagination and speed. Moreover, they have the unpredictable and destructive genius Rin, the perfect copycat Reo, and cool-headed passer Hiori. Finally, there are two genius defenders Niko and Aryu, who, despite being different in every way, make an incredible defense.

However, holding that team together is Yoichi Isagi, whose football prowess is born from his brain and adaptability. He realises that if they don’t crush the ringleader, Nigeria can’t win. In that moment, the ball reaches Onazi, and a flashback begins. We see how as kids, the Nigerian players realised how much of a genius Onazi was. With him on their team, the group of orphan children dreamed of going pro. We realise that his teammates’ trust still drives Onazi. With a series of great passes, the ace gets the ball on his foot. Kuso is confident in his shot, as Onazi has the power to shoot goals midair from a variety of positions.

Just as Onazi gets ready to shoot the ball into the goal, Gin Gagamaru stands in his way. We learn that during the two-week break, Ego sent him to a special training session. He was trained to catch baseballs, which are much smaller than footballs, and not let them get in the goalpost. With this training, his reaction speed has increased a lot.

Onazi shoots the ball, but after all that training, Gin’s body moves on its own. Before the ball can get into the goalpost in a perfect trajectory, the guardian deity of Japan, Gin Gagamaru, stops it. The half-time begins with Japan still ahead by two goals.

While talking about the team, Kuso didn’t mention Gin Gagamaru. Either due to his confidence in Onazi, or the fact that the ball never reached him, he didn’t know that Gin is as powerful and talented as the rest of the team. Much like the other 10 players, Gin practiced day and night to become the best goalkeeper, and his recent save proves it. While going up against an explosive striker like Onazi, he never once faltered and stopped the ball in the air. With all of Blue Lock ready to take them down, Nigeria doesn’t seem to have a chance in this match.
