After an almost 8-year run, Shuichi Shigeno’s MF Ghost is coming to an end.

Shuichi Shigeno’s Initial D sequel MF Ghost is set to end in the 12th issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine, with only three chapters left to the story. The 10th issue of the magazine, which was released today on February 3, revealed the announcement.

MF Ghost began serialisation in Weekly Young Magazine in September 2017, and is Shigeno’s first automobile-themed manga since Initial D ended after an 18-year run in 2013. As of October 2024, MF Ghost’s chapters have been collected in 21 tankobon volumes.

The series is set in the year 202X, where self-driving electric cars have replaced internal combustion ones. In Japan, a large organisation called MFC, founded by Ryosuke Takahashi (who founded both the Akagi RedSuns and Project D in Initial D), is still hosting street races with internal combustion cars.

The story follows a 19-year old Japanese-British Kanata Rivington, who takes the street racing scene by storm. Kanata was trained by Initial D’s protagonist Takumi Fujiwara, and joins racing competitions to find his long-lost father. The series entered the climax of its ‘final battle’ in January 2025.

MF Ghost was adapted into an anime television series by Felix Film in January 2022, with its second season coming out in 2024. A third season is currently in the works, although no further information and release date has been revealed as of yet.

The series is directed by Tomohito Naka (New Initial D the Movie Battle Digest, Sword Gai: The Animation), with Kenichi Yamashita (Armed Girl’s Machiavellism, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s) credited for supervising the scripts, which are co-written by Akihiko Inari (Cowboy Bebop,The Vision of Escaflowne). Naoyuki Onda (Ai no Kusabi, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I-III) designed the characters, while Akio Dobashi (Dance in the Vampire Bund, Initial D Legend 1-3) composed the music.
