A new Chihayafuru live-action series is set to premiere in July 2025.
Based on the popular manga by Yuki Suetsugu, Chihayafuru is getting a new entry to its live-action franchise, this time exploring an original story set 10 years after the ending. The live-action series, titled ‘Chihayafuru -Meguri-’ is set to air on NTV in July 2025.
Director Norihiro Koizumi, who also worked on the original live-action films of Chihayafuru, is slated as showrunner, while Naoya Fujita, Daisuke Honda, Chiaki Matsumoto, and Kazuhiro Yoshida are set to direct episodes of the series. The screenplay is credited to Monogatari Lab and Suzuyuki Kaneko, with mangaka Yuki Suetsugu collaborating, and Masaru Yokoyama composing the music.
According to a machine translation of Chihayafuru -Meguri-’s official website, the show will follow a new group of students who will undertake the challenge of competitive Karuta.
The main cast and remaining staff are yet to be revealed.
Chihayafuru’s manga was first serialised in Kodansha’s josei manga magazine ‘Be Love’ from December 2007 to August 2022, while an anime adaptation spanning 3 seasons aired from 2011 to 2012, 2013, and 2019 to 2020 respectively. The series also spawned 3 live-action film adaptations, which were released from 2016 to 2018.
The official blurb for Chihayafuru’s anime series on Crunchyroll describes the story as:
Chihaya Ayase has spent most of her life supporting her sister’s model career. When she meets a boy named Arata Wataya, he thinks Chihaya has potential to become a great karuta player. As Chihaya dreams of becoming Japan's best karuta player, she is soon separated from her karuta playing friends. Now in high school, Chihaya still plays karuta in the hope that she will one day meet her friends again.
