Anime with devastating endings

Source: Wit Studio

Are you looking for some shows that will leave you feeling hopeless? Are you not okay?

When you’re down in the dumps, there are anime titles out there with the power to bring you even lower. Are you looking to get your tragedy fix, or do you just want to see the world burn? These 5 anime series will devastate you with their hopeless and sometimes totally tragic endings.

Don’t worry, we’re not going to spoil exactly what will happen in these series. We’re pretty sure you’ll either cry or sit in silence after you’re finished watching nonetheless.

Attack on Titan

Number of seasons: 4

Number of episodes: 94

Attack On Titan immerses you in a violent world where humans are threatened with the existence of man-eating giants, but the story also delves into the intricacies of socio-political unrest and the tragic effects of war. The ending of this modern shounen classic has left many fans completely dissatisfied or downright bawling into their hands. You’re never going to look at a bird the same way ever again.

Devilman Crybaby

Number of episodes: 10

Devilman Crybaby is a unique show that toys around with the philosophy of good versus evil, and the moral greyness that some people will teeter into for the greater good. The story follows a regular highschooler who stumbles upon the power of devils, and in a bid to protect everyone he holds dear, utilises this power at the sacrifice of his humanity. It also has one of the most unforgettable endings you’ll ever watch, making you feel incredibly empty and hollow inside at the futility of it all.

Banana Fish

Number of episodes: 24

Yes, Banana Fish is a BL, and yes, you really should give it a chance. The show revolves around incredibly serious themes, and isn’t afraid of dabbling in real-world issues like post-war trauma, gang violence, drug addiction, and organised crime, depicting a serious, action-filled story that will have you at the edge of your seat. Beyond Banana Fish’s central themes, there is also a gut-wrenching, heart-consuming romance that will definitely cause you to shed a few (or more) tears.

Happy Sugar Life

Number of episodes: 12

There aren’t a lot of great yandere-centric shows out there, but if you’re looking for one that’s worth your time, then Happy Sugar Life is the one show you should sit down and watch.

Unlike the unhinged, psychotic yanderes like Yuno Gasai from Mirai Nikki or Kotonoha Katsura from School Days, Happy Sugar Life’s main character Sato Matsuzaka offers a very chilling, terrifying look into a realistic yandere. Which of course means that Happy Sugar Life, although harbouring such a sweet, hopeful title, is every bit a horrific tragedy that will make you feel sick to your stomach.

Berserk 1997

Number of episodes: 25

A true anime veteran will always have Berserk 1997 on their list of shows with hopeless endings, even though it’s not really the end of the story.

This adaptation of the late Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus Berserk is a retelling of the manga’s infamous Golden Age Arc, where the lone mercenary Guts is recruited into the charismatic Griffith’s mercenary group the Band of the Hawk, and the tragic events that will lead to Gut’s ultimate quest for revenge. The last few episodes of this show are not for the faint of heart.
