The popular 2006 anime movie The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is coming back after almost two decades in a new form. The original sci-fi romance’s movie’s creator and director Mamoru Hosoda is writing a novel adaptation of the film. Published by KADOKAWA, the book is coming out on 29 August, 2025.

The official X (formerly Twitter) account of Studio Chizu revealed the news. The novel is titled Toki o Kakeru Shōjo: A Novel based on the Animated Film (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: A Novel based on the Animated Film). According to KADOKAWA, the book will be 246 pages long and be released on 29 August. The book also revealed its cover.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time came out back in 2006, and was extremely critically acclaimed. The movie is set 20 years after the original book of the same name by Yasutaka Tatsui. Although it draws much inspiration from the original book, the film is a masterpiece in its own right.
It went on to win multiple Japanese and international awards, making Mamoru Hosoda a popular name in the anime movie industry. Ever since then, Hosoda has directed other critically acclaimed movies such as Wolf Children, Summer Wars, Mirai, and Belle. His upcoming movie is Scarlet, which is coming out on 12 December, 2025.
The story of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time movie follows Makoto, a teenage girl who unlocks the power to travel through time. After discovering her ability, Makoto leaps through time to re-take tests, correct embarrassing situations, and live a carefree life. But when she realises the damage her time travelling has done on the people she loves, she only has a few leaps left to make everything right!
