Sakamoto Days Episode 9: Shin meets his adoptive father and Sakamoto takes the fight to a train

The leader of Slur makes his first appearance in the anime.

The recent episode of Sakamoto Days came close to what I had expected from the anime. Although it was nowhere near the level of the original manga yet, this issue had some great moments. The fight scene in the train perfectly delivered the bizarre comedic moments this series is known for. The scene where Shin meets up with his father and the rest of the lab workers was also wonderful.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains massive spoilers from the manga.

Heisuke and Shin take down the invisible man

As I mentioned before, this episode had quite a few great fighting scenes. Heisuke, with his fantastic aim and Shin, with his mind-reading powers, confronted Seba, the invisible villain. After a bit of back and forth, we find out that it’s actually Seba’s special clothes that can turn him invisible. Heisuke breaks a sprinkler over Seba’s head, making him visible to the naked eye. Shin then easily takes down the man. It was really fun to see them becoming close to each other and working as a team. I can’t wait for Heisuke and Piisuke to be integrated into the Sakamoto family!

The deer man, whose name is Kashima, reveals to Sakamoto that he has modified 70% of his whole body to become top-of-the-line weapons. He can shoot from his right hand and cut with the blades on his other. His fight against Sakamoto in the basement was really funny because our protagonist used a mechanical pencil to bring this human-weapon to his knees. But that wasn’t the end of his humiliation!

Train Fight! Train Fight! Train Fight!

If you’re a fan of action films, then you’ll know the value of two things: a high-speed car chase, and an all out battle inside of a train. This episode takes Kashima and Sakamoto’s fight to an underground train. And it’s every bit as glorious as you’d expect. Kashima gets battered by (a now thin) Sakamoto, and realises that his fancy weapons don’t hold a candle against his opponent’s raw power and talent. We see a glimpse of the reason why Sakamoto was the best assassin during his prime. Even Kashima understands why Slur’s leader respects Sakamoto so much.

What I loved more than the fight itself was how nonchalant the normal citizens were about it. A villain even throws one bystander across the carriage! But Sakamoto catches them and sits them down safely. He even gives a boy some cookies. It felt like the people were watching a very interesting movie instead of a lethal fight, and it made me crack up several times. I hope the anime never loses the essence of Yuto Suzuki’s humour, which makes the manga so enjoyable. I also liked the ominous mood of the episode when Slur’s leader practically froze Shin to the ground with his bloodlust.

Overall, I would deem this episode to be a success. I almost teared up watching Shin reunite with his adoptive father, who is extremely proud of him. Although the lab broke down, Sakamoto, Shin, Lu, and Heisuke were able to save everyone. But the fun has only started now that the Order has identified Slur’s leader who is killing assassins left-and-right. Sakamoto Days episode 10 is coming out on Saturday, 15 March, 2025.
