Minoru Toyoda’s award-winning manga Kore Kaite Shine receives anime adaptation

The manga won an award at the 70th Shogakukan Manga Awards.

A heartfelt anime about the trials and tribulations of becoming a manga artist is on its way. Based on Minoru Toyoda’s popular and critically acclaimed manga, the Kore Kaite Shine (Draw This, Then Die), the anime is confirmed to be under production. The news was announced on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Shogakukan’s Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine.

Kore Kaite Shine is a highly beloved maanga

The manga began serialising in 2019, and has 7 tankōbon volumes so far. The series is highly acclaimed, with Toyoda winning the 16th Manga Taisho award in 2023, and the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2025 for it. It defeated heavyweight titles such as The Summer Hikaru Died, Takopi’s Original Sin, Goodbye, Eri, and Akane Banashi to win the Taisho Award. Kore Kaite Shine won the 70th Shogakukan award alongside Burning Kabaddi by Musashino Hajime, Natsume Arata no Kekkon by Taro Nogizaka, and Puniru Is a Cute Slime by Maeda-kun.

According to a report by Comic Natalie, at the Shogakukan award ceremony, famed mangaka Taiyo Matsumoto commented that all the judges loved Toyoda’s work a lot. He said that it’s like a fairy tale unfolding on a beautiful island. Toyoda, on the other hand, said that he’s overwhelmed by Matsumoto’s comments. However, he will keep saying to himself that he just got lucky so that he pushes himself even further in future. Previous works by Toyoda, including Love Roma and Takeo-chan Bukkairoku have also received massive praise.

The story of Kore Kaite Shinai takes place on Izu Ōshima, an island 120 km south of Tokyo. A young girl named Yasumi Ai lives there, and loves reading manga whenever she has time. But after an incident, Yasumi promises that she will create her own manga series. Filled with emotional ups and downs, this story is deserving of every praise it receives. Toyoda released a beautiful illustration on his X (formerly Twitter) account to celebrate the anime adaptation.
