The news was revealed by the mangaka Takehiko Inoue.
Takehiko Inoue, the creator of the iconic series Slam Dunk, has revealed on his X (formerly Twitter) account that the beloved basketball manga is getting its first ever digital edition. The digital version will be released on 2 June, 2025.
Slam Dunk’s digital release will offer a similar experience to physical versions
In a further series of posts, Inoue, through a machine translation stated that the original manuscript was made with B4 and B3-sized Kent paper, which he mused could be easier to read on a large tablet device. He also cited that readers will get a good look at the binding, which are parts that are difficult to open in physical books.
According to Oricon News, Inoue’s works are rarely available in digital formats, with only his work “REAL” receiving an e-book format in 2019 as his digital debut. “Slam Dunk” is Inoue’s second series to receive a digital release.
“Slam Dunk” (stylised as SLAM DUNK) is a sports manga that follows the delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi, as he learns to love and enjoy basketball. The manga was serialised in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from October 1990 to June 1996, with its chapters being collected into 31 tankobon volumes. The now defunct Gutsoon! Entertainment licensed the manga for an English release from 2002 to 2004, with Viz Media later on purchasing the rights to the English license in 2008.
The manga received an anime adaptation produced by Toei Animation, and consisted of 101 episodes that aired from October 1993 to March 1996. The series saw a revival in recent years, with an anime movie titled “The First Slam Dunk” premiering in 2022.
