The Spring 2025 season has given us many amazing characters to dote on.
The Spring 2025 anime season has been great so far, with a roster of amazing shows for you to pick from. Whether you like romance, fantasy, shonen, or mystery, the new season has something for everyone.
But what about the characters? Are they as complex and dynamic as the plot, or do they fall flat when compared to the other bells and whistles? We have collected a list of the best characters that were introduced to us this season, and what we expect from them in the future. You can also learn about our first impression of the Spring 2025 anime season on our website.
Philia Adenauer - The Too-Perfect Saint

Philia's growth has been amazing so far (Image: Troyca).
The Too-Perfect Saint, based on Koki Fuyutsuki’s light novel series, turned out to be a great political drama. Philia, the character at the center of all conflict, is a powerful saint who spent her entire life trying to protect her country of Ziltonia. But the second prince and her fiance Julius Ziltonia sells her off to their neighbouring country of Parnacorta, usurping her of the home she has known all her life.
But we see that Philia is treated a lot better in her new home. Although she’s stoic in nature due to not having many friends growing up, she really comes to herself when met with kindness for the first time. On the other side is her younger sister Mia, who replaces Philia as Ziltonia’s new Saint. Mia wants to exact revenge on their country for treating Philia so horribly all her life. The two sisters are very different yet similar. Philia’s growth has been slow but meaningful and I can’t wait to see where the plot takes the sisters next.
Kageyama - The Dinner Table Detective

Kageyama is a mystery solving butler (Image: Madhouse).
Mystery solving is a pretty common plot point in anime nowadays, with shows like Ron Kamonohashi and Ameku MD popping up every season. This season, the spot has been claimed by The Dinner Table Detectives, based on Tokuya Higashigawa’s light novel series. Kageyama is the butler of heiress and police detective Reiko Hosho. Unlike Hosho and her partner Kyōichirō Kazamatsuri, Kageyama is incredibly smart and seems to solve mysteries in his head. He is sharp-tongued and quick-witted, and helps the two detectives solve the most complicated cases after they’re done with dinner. Yuki Kaji has done a pretty good job portraying Kageyama in the series, and I hope to see his character flourish more.
Axel Gilberto - Lazarus

The daredevil sweetheart is making everyone swoon (Image: MAPPA, Sola Entertainment).
Shinichirō Watanabe’s new series is reminiscent of his masterpiece Cowboy Bebop in some ways. Axel Gilberto is the young daredevil criminal protagonist of the new series. And much like Spike Spiegel, you can’t help but love him. He is fearless, and has racked up a shocking 888 year long prison sentence by trying to continuously break out of jail. He is recruited, along with some other people, to find Dr. Skinner. Axel is a genius parkourist, and his stunts are really well done in the anime. Of course, Mamoru Miyano excels at roles like this, and our new hero is no different. Overall, Axel is a lovable character whose skills and charm speak for themselves.
Beryl Gardinant - From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman

Beryl is loved by all his students (Image: Passione/ Hayabusa Film).
The protagonist of this fantasy anime is a teacher loved by everyone. Although he’s the definition of a country bumpkin, Beryl Gardinant trained some of the most influential swordsmen of the country in his humble dojo. When he is forced to regroup with them, we understand why his students love and respect him so much. Not only is he a skilled fighter, but an extremely kind and loving person who likes taking care of those around him. It’s no surprise that some of his students are in love with him. Although the anime has a harem romance quality to it, Beryl actually loves all of his students as a teacher and does everything in his power to help them. Watching him guiding others in this show is really a treat.
Nico and Mori - WITCH WATCH

Nico and Mori's unfortunate adventures are hilairous (Image: Bibury Animation Studio).
Nico is the protagonist of the new supernatural comedy anime Witch Watch, while Mori is her childhood best friend, current love interest, and familiar. A witch’s familiar is usually an animal, but Nico’s mother especially asks Mori, who is an ogre, to take care of her daughter. Their shenanigans, especially Nico’s magic fails, will have you in stitches. The two have great chemistry, and their voice actors Rina Kawaguchi and Ryōta Suzuki have also done a fantastic job. Nico is a free spirited and outgoing girl while Mori is a careful and strong individual. Despite their differences, the duo’s growing love and care for each other becomes more evident in each episode.
Anne - Anne Shirley

Anne Shirley teaches us all to stand up for ourselsves (Image: The Answer Studio).
Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s world famous novel Anne of Green Gables, the new Anne Shirley anime has captured the attention of all classic lovers. Much like the books, Anne from the anime is also free spirited and has a vivid imagination that runs wild. Despite being only 11, she always stands up for herself, and tells off bullies who make fun of her looks and red hair. She is an incredibly lovable child character that grows and learns about the world throughout the story.
Lilisa and Otoha - Rock is a Lady’s Modesty

Otoha and Lilisa's chemistry is stunning (Image: Bandai Namco Pictures).
Based on Hiroshi Fukuda’s manga, this anime has won the hearts of thousands of fans this season. The protagonist Lilisa is a beautiful girl who starts to attend an elite all girls school after her mother gets remarried into a rich family. On the other hand, Otoha comes from a powerful political family and is admired by everyone in the academy. But when Lilisa discovers Otoha’s love for playing the drums, she can’t help but fall into the other’s trap and accompany her with a guitar. The two fire each other up during their practice while Lilisa tries to hide their rendezvous from everyone. The two are opposites yet similar in many ways, and watching their friendship blossom has been one of the highlights of this spring for me. It’s also fun to see how these pure innocent girls turn into badmouthing monsters while performing.
Koichi Haimawari - My Hero Academia: Vigilantes

Koichi teaches us the true meaning of selflessness (Image: Bones Film).
The protagonist of MHA: Vigilantes is similar to the hero of the original manga and anime in many ways. Much like Deku, Koichi wants to help people in need and can’t ignore those who are in danger. Despite not having a very powerful Quirk, Koichi helps everyone as much as he can. He can come off as a bit creepy, but is actually very calm and personable once people get to know him. Throughout the series, his character development has been amazing, and it was fun to see how much he has grown as a vigilante hero. Along with Pop Step and Knuckleduster, Koichi is definitely a character we’ll remember for a long time.
Tasuku Tsubakino - Wind Breaker Season 2

Tsubaki's confidence is something we should all strive for (Image: CloverWorks).
Wind Breaker is filled with amazing characters that have won hearts with their development and growth. However, most of these characters, including Sakura, Umemiya, Suo, and Nirei were all introduced back in 2024 during season 1. In season 2, we met Tasuku Tsubakino, aka Tsubaki, who is the leader of one of the four factions of Bofurin. Despite being a boy, Tsubaki likes dressing up in skirts, heels, and likes to wear makeup. They also like dancing and other “girly” hobbies that men are often bullied for. However, Tsubaki is incredibly strong and proud of who they are, and they don’t hide from anybody. In the anime, we saw how they overcame social stigma with the help of an older couple. I can’t wait to see Tsubaki become a greater part of Sakura and his friends’ lives. Much like the other fans, I’m eagerly waiting to see Tsubaki in a proper fight.
Reiko Kujirai - Kowloon Generic Romance

Reiko's charm lies in her complexity (Image: Arvo Animation).
When it comes to mystery, dystopia, and the supernatural, Kowloon Generic Romance has everyone else beat this season. Reiko Kujirai is the troubled protagonist of this series, who lives in the confines of Kowloon Walled City. Despite her love for new things and her deep seated desire to venture outside of the walls, there’s something always pulling her in. She’s also in love with her co-worker Hajime Kudou. However, her life starts to fall apart when she learns about her forgotten past, and about who she used to be. Reiko has a complex personality and often tries to do things that would get her away from the shadow of her past. Due to the fantastic story of Jun Mayuzuki’s original manga, this anime takes your breath away from the very first episode, as does Reiko Kujirai.
