The original anime is Kinema Citrus’s 15th anniversary project.
The official website and X (formerly Twitter) account for Kinema Citrus’s upcoming original anime “Goodbye, Lara” (Sayonara Lara) has revealed new information for the anime, including its first promotional video and a teaser visual.
The original anime is touted as the studio’s 15th anniversary original anime project, and is confirmed for a 2026 release, although a definitive date is yet to be determined.
“Goodbye, Lara” cast, staff and other details
The website for “Goodbye, Lara” describes the story as a reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, “The Little Mermaid”. In this anime’s version, a mermaid princess named Lara falls in love with a human prince, and following the original fairytale, comes into contact with a Sea Witch who gives her a potion that can turn her into a human.
The potion, which uses forbidden magic, has a catch: if Lara does not find her “true love”, she will turn into bubbles and disappear.
Similar to the tragic ending of the fairytale, Lara does not find her true love, turns into bubbles, and disappears into the sea.
But the anime is set to continue Lara’s story. 200 years after she turned into bubbles, Lara is resurrected in Japan’s Lake Biwa after 200 years, and with this miraculous second chance, is set to finally find “true love.”
Hana Hishikawa, known for her role as Yui Nagomi in Delicious Party Precure, is voicing the mermaid princess Lara. No other cast has been revealed.
Takushi Kode helms this original anime project as director, with Anna Kawahara handling series composition. Shiori Tani is in charge of character design, and Yuma Yamaguchi will compose the music. The concept is an original project from Kinema Citrus.
