The upcoming anime film has also revealed a main poster visual.
First announced in April, the newest movie from Academy Award-nominated director Mamoru Hosada, “Scarlet” has unveiled its two main cast members and main poster. The movie is set to exclusively premiere in movie theatres on 12 December, 2025.
Japanese actors Mana Ashida, Masaki Okada join the cast
Mana Ashida voiced the titular protagonist, Scarlet. Primarily an actress and singer, Ashida has been active in films and television since 2009, but has also done dub work for Hollywood films like Despicable Me, Aftershock, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This will be Ashida’s first voice role in an anime film.
On the other hand, Masaki Okada is confirmed to have taken on the role of Hijiri, a modern-day nurse accompanying Scarlet in her journey. Similar to Ashida, Okada is primarily a film and television actor, and before working on this film has had no prior experience in voice acting in an anime film. The two have previously worked together in the 2020 film “Hoshi no Ko” (Child of the Stars”) by Tatsushi Omori, and this is the first time they have worked with Hosoda.
According to a report by ComicNatalie, Ashida and Okada had pre-recorded their lines since last year. The film is produced by Hosoda’s Studio Chizu, with Sony Pictures co-financing and co-producing. The story, according to the ComicNatalie report, follows a kindhearted princess named Scarlet.
However, after her father, the king, was murdered in front of her eyes, Scarlet became obsessed with exacting revenge. Meanwhile, Hijiri, who has wandered into the “land of the dead”, has a chance encounter with an injured Scarlet. With a personal mission to heal the wounded, Hijiri joins Scarlet’s journey, initially with her resistance, to support her as she travels towards her goal.
