One Piece Chapter 1148 showcases the bravery of the Elbaph children

Robin momentarily succeeds against Killingham, but it’s not enough to save Ronja.

The latest issue of Eiichiro Oda’s manga definitely upped the stakes for the remaining Straw Hats and the Giants. With a child named Ronja’s life on the line, Robin tries to take down Killingham to the Underworld so he can’t reach her anymore. But it’s not enough as the other God’s Knights plan to kill the child if the Giants don’t agree to burn the school and the library. However, there is one more person who can stop them.

One Piece Chapter 1148 recap

Robin uses her powers on Sommers (Image: Shueisha/ Eiichiro Oda).

The issue begins with a Giant child named Ronja walking to the edge of a cliff following Gunko’s arrow. The other children ask her to stop, but she can’t. She smiles and says everything is okay even though she’s terrified. Sommers announces that if the people of Elbaph don’t agree to burn down the library and school in 30 seconds, they would throw Ronja into the Underworld. The giants start arguing amongst themselves about whether they should sacrifice their history for their children. The Straw Hats criticise Sommers about hurting children, something even the lowest of criminals don’t do. Franky, Ripley, and the rest of the giant warriors get on another ship and hurry to Branch 8. Sommers announces that they can’t retrieve any book or paper from the school and the library as the main goal is to destroy Elbaph’s rich culture and history.

Suddenly, Robin uses her Devil Fruit power to throw Sommers off the thorny branch he was standing on. She uses the extra limbs that she sprouted from his body to break his neck, but since he’s immortal, it hardly has any effect on him. She then wraps her whole body around him and pulls him into the cliff with her. It seems her plan is to take Sommers as far away from the children as possible so his thorns have no effect on them. That way, the other adults can save them. But before they can fall too far, Sommers sprouts thorns from his body and pierces her. As she disappears, the Holy Knight understands that it was nothing but a clone. Back on Elbaph, Robin tries to cut down the ropes binding the Straw Hats but fails. Sommers starts speaking again, and we learn that he saved himself from falling with a thorny vine.

He says that there’s only ten seconds left before Ronja is thrown to her death. Suddenly, Ronja speaks up. She tells Jarul that she loves the school where her friends are and the library which is a treasure trove of knowledge. The books taught her about everything in the world while her teachers told her to never cause trouble for other people. She says that if the school and library are burned down, everyone will be upset and it would be a big trouble. She insists that she should fall and assures everyone that she’ll be alright. As the child cries while facing death, everyone on the island starts to tear up. In the end, Jarul agrees to burn both buildings to save their children. Sommers then tries to hurt Robin with the thorny vines. But before he can kill her, someone zooms past him, cutting his arm off. We realise that it’s Scopper Gaban, who has met Sommers before. In the final panel of the chapter, we see Gaban cutting through Sommers’ chest with an angry look on his face.

One Piece Chapter 1148 review

Ronja is ready to sacrifice her life (Image: Shueisha/ Eiichiro Oda).

We are finally going to see Scopper Gaban in a proper fight! Oda has been hyping up the character since the beginning of the Elbaph arc, and we will get to see why very soon. Robin tried her best to stop the villain, but her efforts were just not enough in front of the mighty power of the Holy Knights. With Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro still in the Underworld, Gaban is the only person present who can put up a fight against Sommers. Although I’m interested to see how the rest of the giants stand up against Gunko, and I believe it’ll have something to do with Franky, Ripley, and the warrior pirates. I hope they can save the children in time without compromising Elbaph’s history and culture.
