Blue Lock Chapter 309 recap

Isagi, Bachira, and Rin meet their other teammates in Blue Lock (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

Isagi bids adieu to his parents and heads to the Blue Lock headquarters. We learn that there’s only 30 days left until the U-20 World Cup begins, which means everyone’s personal training is over. Isagi meets Bachira outside Blue Lock and the other boy greets him enthusiastically. Bachira asks if he grew taller to which Isagi asks how he could grow taller in two weeks. Rin enters then, calling him lukewarm and saying he grew a centimeter over the break. Bachira teases him about wanting to get praised by Isagi as the trio makes it inside. There, they meet the other players such as Karasu, Hiori, Oliver, Kunigami, Reo, and the rest.

As they greet each other, Ego enters the room and congratulates them on doing a good job during their personal training. He says that none of them are the same as they were two weeks ago as all of them have acquired a new weapon in the meantime. He tells them to throw away their thoughts about ‘bonds’ or ‘for the sake of Blue Lock’. Ego points out that he will use all of them to fulfill his own dreams, so they should use him to do the same. He tells them to forget about carrying Japanese football on their backs and go beyond their own egos.

Ego gives a rousing speech (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

After the rousing speech, Ego tells them that their first match will be against the last U-20 World Cup’s Champions of Africa-Nigeria. The second match will be against the world’s best France, and the third will be against England, the birthplace of football. He invites them to join him in a specially curated training that will make them a brand new egoist team in 30 days.

As the players start looking hyped, the chapter moves to Nagi, who is seen playing a game in an arcade.

Nagi feels that he made the right decision turning down Buratsuta as it won’t be his ego anymore if he accepted the money-hungry man’s deal. He thinks about how Isagi asked him not to quit football. He remembers his friends asking whether he will go pro and contemplates if he can still play even though he won’t make it to the Japanese team. He wonders if it will satiate his thirst. Did his fire come from just playing football or did it come from Blue Lock? In the end, what even is Nagi’s Ego? As he contemplates this, a figure comes up behind and says he has been looking for him. Nagi turns around to see his former Blue Lock teammate Igarashi Gurimu aka Igaguri smiling down at him.

Blue Lock Chapter 309 review

Nagi wonders about the true nature of his Ego (Image: Kodansha/ Muneyuki Kaneshiro/ Yusuke Nomura).

Igaguri was forced to leave Blue Lock at the same time as Nagi after the Neo Egoist League. The fact that he’s approaching Nagi now doesn’t sit right with me. It seems that Buratsuta might have rallied Igaguri to his side to persuade Nagi to accept his deal. Maybe by offering him the last place in the Buratsuta Three? I’m excited to see his conversation with Nagi, who is stuck between a rock and a hard place, not being able to figure out his own ego. On the other hand, Isagi and the others will begin their group training ahead of the U-20 World Cup knockoffs. Training montages have always been my favourite, so I can’t wait to see all the players finally displaying what they learned during their personal preparation.
