The second season celebrates the first season of the anime, which came out in 2015.
The GATE anime, based on Takumi Yanai’s light novel series of the same name, released its first season in 2015. Ever since then, fans have been waiting for Season 2, but the project was stuck in development hell for a decade.
However, finally, GATE has confirmed a second season! The news comes as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the original anime. Titled “GATE 2: Tides of Conflict”, this series will adapt Season 2 of the novel series. Unfortunately, no release date has been announced yet.
GATE 2 cast, staff, and other details
Although the official website and X (formerly Twitter) account of the series have not provided an update on the anime’s cast, we have some idea about the characters we will see on screen. The production team has shared conceptual visuals of five characters from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, who will be at the center of the story next season. The characters are:
- Tokushima Hajime
- Etajima Goro
- Primera
- Odette
- Shura
Toru Takahashi will be directing the second season under Studio M2. Tatsuhiko Urahara is in charge of the series scripts and composition. Shigeru Fujita is designing the characters for the upcoming sequel. More details about the staff and cast will be announced in the future.
Takumi Yanai has shared a special message with the fans to celebrate the adaptation of the Season 2 GATE novels, which is coming after a decade. The series is based on his novel series, illustrated by Daisuke Izuka and Kurojishi. Several manga adaptations of the novel have also been published. The second season novels were published between 2017 and 2020, with a total of five volumes. Sentai Filmworks licensed the 2015 anime series in North America and describes the story as:
When a dimensional rift appears in downtown Tokyo and begins spewing an army of monsters and men in medieval armor, 33-year-old JSDF officer Yoji Itami’s hobbies of fantasy novels and video games suddenly complement his military training and help rout an invasion from another world! They also make him a natural choice for the first major expeditionary force to be sent into the Gate, and what he and the JSDF find on the other side is both amazing and terrifying. Elves. Dragons. Beast people. But there’s a far worse danger to be feared, because while spears, shields and even giant teeth can be countered with modern weapons, nothing is as ruthless, deadly or hard to stop as the treachery of men who will sacrifice anything or anyone in order to control the new world on the other side of the GATE.
